Sabai

Policy

Privacy

Short version: we collect the minimum needed to make Sabai work, we sell nothing, and you can have your data deleted at any time.

This is an English translation. If the English and Dutch versions differ, the Dutch version applies.

What we store

  • Your email address (so you can log in).
  • Your username, display name, bio, location and profile photo (all filled in by you).
  • What you post: topics, replies, changes to them, photos you upload, emoji reactions, bookmarks and topics you follow.
  • Your private messages. Only you and the other person see them.
  • Reports you make (with your note) and members you block. A block also reaches the moderators as a report.
  • Your notifications on the forum (the bell) and your choice of email for replies.
  • The technical session cookie that keeps you logged in.
  • Anonymised technical logs (IP address + user agent) for a maximum of 30 days, to fight abuse.

What we do not do

  • No advertising networks and no Meta pixels. We do not use visitor statistics for advertising.
  • No sale of data to third parties, and no transfer except to the processors below.
  • No targeted profiling for commercial purposes.

The Sabai app

The app Sabai: Living in Thailand (for iPhone, iPad and Android) also works without an account. Then everything stays on your phone.

  • Only on your phone: your stay (the dates from your stamp, your extensions and reports), your reminders, the ticks in the checklists, drafts of posts, what you have read, saved guides, the rate in the money calculator and your language choice. We never see any of it. Delete the app and it is gone.
  • To sabai.forum, only when you sign in with your Sabai account: what you post and change (topics, replies, photos), your private messages, emoji reactions, bookmarks, topics you follow, reports with your note, members you block and your profile text. Exactly as on the website.
  • Notifications on your phone: if you turn them on, the forum keeps your phone's notification address (a code from Apple on an iPhone, from Google on an Android phone), the app's language and version and your notification choices. We keep that until you sign out, tap "Stop notifications on this phone", or until Apple or Google reports that the address no longer works.
  • Signing in happens on the forum's own sign-in page. The app never sees your password; the forum gives the app a one-time code that expires after two minutes.
  • Exchange rate: if you fetch the current rate in the money calculator, the app gets it from the European Central Bank. No data about you goes with it.
  • No ads, no statistics and no tracking in the app. It contains no Google Analytics or any other measuring tool.
  • You can delete your account in the app itself: More, Sabai account, Delete account.

Processors

We store data with Supabase (EU Central, Frankfurt) for the database and with Vercel for running the website. These parties only process your data; they do not own it.

Google Workspace sends our emails from info@abn.company: confirmations, login links, new passwords and, if you turn it on, an email for replies. Apple (Apple Push Notification service) delivers notifications to your iPhone if you turn them on in the app; for that Apple receives your phone's notification address and the text of the notification. On an Android phone Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging) delivers the notifications, with the same data.

AI summaries: when a topic has many replies, a member can have a short summary made. The public text of the topic then goes to the AI service of Anthropic, without usernames. The summary says that it was written with AI.

When you sign up, log in, request a login link or a new password, or change your password, we use Cloudflare Turnstile. It automatically checks that a human, not a robot, is filling in the form. To do this, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address and characteristics of your browser. Cloudflare does not receive what you type into the form. The check only loads when you use one of these forms. Cloudflare does this on our behalf and also uses this technical data itself to recognise robots better. More about this is in Cloudflare's privacy policy for Turnstile.

Visitor statistics

We use Google Analytics to see how Sabai is used: which pages are visited, for how long, through which link you arrived, with what kind of device and browser, and roughly from which country or region. This shows us which topics are useful and what could be better. Google processes this data on our behalf; the IP address is not stored. We do not link these statistics to your account and do not use them for advertising.

Google Analytics only loads if you give your consent. On your first visit we ask for it in a bar at the bottom of the screen. If you choose No thanks, or choose nothing, Google Analytics does not load and your visits are not counted. More is in Google's privacy policy.

Cookies

We use one essential cookie for your login session, and one cookie (sabai_consent) that remembers for 12 months which choice you made about visitor statistics. Only if you click Accept does Google Analytics place analytics cookies (starting with _ga) to count visits. We do not use marketing cookies.

You can change your choice at any time via at the bottom of every page. If you withdraw your consent, we remove the _ga cookies and Google Analytics no longer loads.

Your rights

  • You can always view and change your profile details in Settings.
  • You can delete your account yourself: on the website in Settings, Delete account, in the app in More, Sabai account, Delete account. You choose: your topics and replies stay under a name like "verwijderd-x7k2pq" and can no longer be linked to you, or everything is deleted, including your topics with the replies under them and your private messages. It takes effect at once.
  • You have the right of access, rectification, restriction, data portability and objection under the GDPR.

Retention period

We keep profile data for as long as your account exists. Topics and replies are kept for as long as they are relevant to the community. We keep a phone's notification address until you sign out or stop the notifications. Logs are deleted after 30 days.

Questions or complaints

Email info@abn.company. You also always have the right to file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
