In short (as of 11 October 2026)
If you leave Thailand with a temporary permission to stay and without a re-entry permit, you lose that permission. This is set out in section 39 of the Immigration Act of 1979.
Single: used 1 time, 1,000 baht. Multiple: several times as long as your stay runs, 3,800 baht.
How to apply: in person at an immigration office, or on the day of departure at passport control (departure hall) at the airport. With form TM.8 and 1 passport photo.
When you return, you may stay until the end date you already had. The 90-day report count does start again.
No re-entry permit needed according to the official sources: LTR holders and students with an ED Plus. Permanent residents use an endorsement (1,900 baht).
This article is for anyone with an extension or other temporary stay in Thailand, such as a retirement or marriage extension, who wants to travel abroad in between. The general Thai rules in this guide apply to all nationalities; the parts about embassies and documents are written for Dutch and Belgian passport holders, so if you hold another passport, check the requirements of the Thai embassy or consulate that serves you.
Why a Thailand re-entry permit is needed
Section 39 of the Immigration Act (1979) provides that a temporary permission to stay ends as soon as you leave the country. If before departure you were given permission to come back (the re-entry permit), and you are allowed into Thailand on your return, you may stay for the remaining period of your permission.
Immigration Division 1 in Bangkok puts it like this: if you leave Thailand without a re-entry, "it will be considered that the permission to stay in the Kingdom is terminated". With a permit you can, after your return, "continue to stay in the Kingdom for the remaining period".
When it matters most
Extension of 1 year based on retirement, marriage, work or study: without a permit the extension lapses, and with it everything you built up for that extension.
Non-O of 90 days or another temporary stay: that too lapses if you leave without a permit.
Visa with multiple entries
A visa with multiple entries (multiple entry) can be used within its validity to enter Thailand again; the immigration officer then sets the period of stay on arrival (Royal Thai Embassy The Hague, 1 September 2026). An extension you received in Thailand is not covered by this: it lapses without a re-entry permit (section 39).
Single or multiple
Type Use Cost
Single entry leave and return 1 time 1,000 baht
Multiple entry several times, within the 3,800 baht
remaining period of stayThe fees are set in Ministerial Regulation No. 27, in force since 26 August 2003. According to that fee list, a multiple permit can be used "ภายในระยะเวลาที่ยังเหลืออยู่", within the period that remains. Only from 4 trips during the same extension is one multiple permit (3,800 baht) cheaper than separate single permits (4 x 1,000 baht); for 2 or 3 trips, single permits are cheaper.
Euro indication (ECB reference rate of 9 October 2026: 1 euro = 37.574 baht): 1,000 baht is about 27 euros, 3,800 baht about 101 euros.
Where and how to apply
According to Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok):
In person at the immigration office. In Bangkok that is Immigration Division 1, 2nd floor, Building B (south side) of the Government Complex on Chaeng Wattana Road. This office only serves the Bangkok region; if you live elsewhere, ask at the immigration office of your province.
Or on the day of departure at passport control (International Departures) at the airport.
Documents
Passport
Form TM.8 with 1 recent passport photo of 4 x 6 cm
Copies of: the personal details page, the page with the passport's expiry date, the page with amended details (if there is one), the last entry stamp, the extension stamp (if there is one) and the TM.6 departure card (if you have one)
If there is a departure ban: the original documents from the authority concerned and a copy
The fee: 1,000 or 3,800 baht
Step by step
Check your end date in the last extension stamp. Your permit cannot be used for longer than your stay.
Choose single or multiple, depending on how often you travel.
Apply at the immigration office, or at the airport on the day of departure at the latest.
Check the stamp in your passport before you leave.
On return: the immigration officer admits you for the remaining period. After that the 90-day report count starts again (Immigration Bureau): the next report is due 90 days after your last entry.
Who does not need a re-entry permit
LTR holders. The Board of Investment lists "Exemption of re-entry permit" as a benefit of the LTR visa.
ED Plus students. The Royal Thai Embassy in Brussels (7 May 2025) writes that holders of an "ED Plus" visa during their studies "can depart and re-enter Thailand without the need for a re-entry permit".
Permanent residents (residence certificate) do not use a re-entry permit but an endorsement in their residence book, for 1,900 baht (form TM.13).
What happens without a re-entry permit
Your permission to stay, for example an extension of 1 year, ends the moment you leave.
On return you need a new basis for entry: a visa exemption, a new visa, or a still valid visa with multiple entries.
If you then want an extension of 1 year again, you go through the procedure again, with all the requirements that come with it, such as the bank period for a retirement extension.
Common mistakes
Thinking a valid visa is enough. An extension you received in Thailand lapses when you leave without a permit, even if your original visa allows multiple entries.
Being too late at the airport. You can only apply for the permit at the airport on the day of departure, at passport control.
Taking a single for several trips. A single permit is used up after one return.
Forgetting the 90-day report after returning. The count starts again from your last entry.
What has changed
26 August 2003: current fees (Ministerial Regulation No. 27): 1,000 and 3,800 baht.
As of 11 October 2026, no change to these fees was found in the official sources consulted.
